Man, I was experiencing withdrawal symptoms...

Apparently, when there's not been a new TFC episode in a while, I drink *more*, which I would not have guessed.

I almost went and subscribed to Blocked and Reported.

Moynihan's transition from the intro "Welch the sub-Luddite" to "I need newsprint to see the article, not broken Tweet threads" is amusing (both of these are valid complaints, btw)

Thanks for salvaging the episode, Michael. It has kind of a lo-fi quality with the ice clinks here and there. This sounds like a joke, but can we keep the ice sound effects? I'm into it.

I always get happy when I hear a fresh drink being poured. It's helps me feel like I'm not drinking alone.

🔥🔥🔥🙌❤️ agree

Somehow there is nothing that screams "Fifth Column" more than ice clinking in a highball glass.Except maybe the great sucking sound of a glass pipe.

the audio on this episode is stochastic terrorism

Jessemy's avatar

I'm into it. It's like ASMR + speakeasy bar ambient loop.

Never fly coach. Never trust Matt with podcast recordings.

How many times must this lesson be learned?

Nika Scothorne's avatar

Hooow many times must Matt Welch lose the audio, befooore he can call himself an old man?

Michael Padden's avatar

At the very least don't trust the person with the new laptop.

Busty, check my memory, but haven't Moynihan and Kmele both lost TFC things due to new tech?

Kathleen's avatar

Kmele has for sure. I think Moynihan may be innocent!

Get. In. My. Veins.

Hey Moynihan- check the scoreboard

Maddow appearances:

Welch: 1

Moynihan: 0

Mattie over here pitching a shutout.

Just found the Easter Egg after many days because Substack knows what I like and thoughtfully saves it for me.

Fucking great episode.

There's *another* Michael Jackson show on in London. My friend was dragged to see it by his wife and sent me a text during the interval that just said "I'm watching a musical about a paedophile."

What else does MM have to do, really? It's good of his co-hosts go give him something to keep him busy.

When I heard the Palestinian Christian Bear line I immediately laughed and nodded along, bc I am one hairy SOB. Then I realized it was a joke in context of the Bearstein bears convo.

Excluding the very harsh individual throttling of various people.

To anyone with half a brain, isn’t it obvious that the twitter algorithm changing is a key aspect of social media? In the YouTube world this is something YouTubers talk about non-stop, all the time. Of course some of the algorithm change is intentionally done, but sometimes isn’t it just changing bc that’s what it is designed to do?

Or am i just the half brained idiot.

Matt Welch's avatar

They doubtlessly have twiddled the algorithm (and also the analytics) many times. You can see it starkly in the numbers.

On the topic of things taken off or being left on streaming, I’m not sure if you guys saw or know about this, but I was wondering what you thought of a specific song (Rock n Roll Ni***r) from Patti Smith’s album Easter (1978) was removed from all major streaming services a month or so ago.

Matt Welch's avatar

Crap, I woulda put that on my Short People Spotify playlist!

Rachel Kaplan's avatar

I know there is a joke in there I am supposed to get and admitting I don’t get it is tres embarrassmente but Patti isn’t short but I am short but you wouldn’t know that so maybe you think Patti is short...but that would be odd so yeah I think it’s all over my head...

DawgInExileNC's avatar

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, MM. That really sucks. Condolences.

Kathleen's avatar

Yes, I’m hoping the little guy pulls through.

On that stuff about "sabotage" and the grid (pipelines, electrical transformers etc.) . I can't be the only one to think that some how this is related to those climate activists who were gluing themselves to floors or vandalizing art work or some shit. Am I totally fuckin gorked here? It all feels to... idk, related?

Ecoterrorism was my first thought as well, though it seems that based in previous unsolved attacks in the West Coast, there may (or may not) be a link to anti-government white nationalist groups. I’m glad MM brought it up because it’s maddening that the motive was immediately ascribed to “anti-trans terror” with no evidence whatsoever but a taunting Facebook message from a person who probably also blames the gays every time there’s a hurricane in Miami. Groups like GLAAD are still treating this conspiracy theory as undisputed fact, even though this line of inquiry has been investigated and apparently disposed with.

You know what THAT is actually what was making my spidey senses tingle. It wasn't so much the patterns or similarities of the events, it was the patterns and similarities of the attributed possible causes. You know how local news joints will all pickup the same wire service report and then just repeat it verbatim? It is like there is a wire service for the hottest of hot takes from the "harming of bodies" crowd, and then they are too lazy / strident to look any further. :D Thank you! It was like a squeaking noise coming out of my vehicle that I couldn't find the cause of. :D
