I'm fine with just the two of you. I'm *happy* it's just the two of you! If I was the type of person who enjoyed spending an hour of my day listening to any braying jackass with an ego, an opinion, and a byline I would never have become a listener and (paid) subscriber in the first place! I know this may not be true for many of the other news and politics addicted weirdos on here, but the selling point of the Fifth to me was always that you guys were the oasis and the respite from the rest of the podcasting and cable news debate crowd. Episodes like this are what I pay for. Political podcasts with the Eli Lakes and Mary Katherine Hams of the world (no offense to them, both of whom I like) are a dime a dozen. I hate almost all political discussion and debate shows. I can barely even watch Real Time. But you three foul-mouthed yet knowledgeable drunken asses with senses of humor and no allegiance to right nor left, you're the pearl in the fuckin' oyster, motherfuckers! Don't apologize for not having a guest star. I don't need the Love Boat. I lke the pirate ship.

This clip roulette concept is a great way to get me to actually watch the video version, though. Well played.

Aaaand there's the substack video crashing the browser again...

And again.

Jérémie Brülhart's avatar

Substack is a terrible app designed to make you mad and possibly kill yourself.

Every new update makes it worse somehow

Archibald.'s avatar

Well stated. Substack has become a dumpster fire.

I like these kinds of episodes. But I personally wouldn't spend money on this podcast if it were only the hosts twice a week. Just look at what happened when they interviewed Terry Moran. They were the ones whose sunlight on Terry exposed that the shithead Anthony Fauci colluded with ABC to kill a story about Covid origins. And they also expose me to guests whom I've never heard of, that then direct me to read books that I wouldn't have even known existed. So again, this was a good episode and all, but (and this is no offense to you), I really hope yours is the minority opinion.

What are you saying? You’d rather listen to some pompous bloviating fraud guest than a rambling historical Moynihan rant, a very articulated speech from Kmele or a strong response which includes a four letter word from Matt? You won’t pay for these three and will only pay to hear some fool ? Mama Mia.

Jake O'Finkelstein's avatar

First fucking sentence:

"I like these kinds of episodes."

Just not all the time.

Hearing the dsa fools talk about Cuba is just laughable if it isn’t just enraging. My aunt became ill in Cuba and they told her they didn’t have any syringes or IV needles to give her fluids or fever meds. Literally fk those idiots.

Michters! Great choice.

I agree I love these, “three foul-mouthed yet knowledgeable drunken asses with senses of humor, etc. “

This is the video form of “Some Idiot Wrote This” and I’m all for it.

Rest in Power, Kmele Foster ✊

I recommend the Fifth make Clip Roulette a regular occurrence. Include a few clips with your reactions on every episode or have a total clip show every so often. The clips were so good! There are so many idiots and morons out there and so little time! Give us more!!!

Saudi Arabia doesnt want a nuke and stated policy is that they will only develop one if Iran gets a nuke.

They want commerical nuclear power. You cannot get a nuke from the commerical light water reactors.

Conflating these two things makes my job harder.

Archibald.'s avatar

Tucker Carlson clearly declared that a demon made our nukes. Clearly, if Iran or Saudi wants nukes, they have to summon that demon.

He just said it wasn’t human. Could have Djinn by his beliefs.

Makes your job harder? And what would you say…you do here?

Nothing makes my blood boil as much as hearing stories about old people being ripped off. I don’t think it’s anti-libertarian to want more regulation over these scammers (for engaging in fraud). Sorry to hear about your father, MW.

Brian Sack's avatar

It’s endemic, and scary when you have elderly parents. The r/scams subreddit is absolutely filled with horrific stories. The most recent is a guy’s elderly dad losing 650K.

I kind of don't think there would be a right wing version of Arday because such a person would be held to a different standard. If they plagiarized, they would be found out immediately as that would be a perfect pretext to maintain ideological orthodoxy within the academy.

Crabbbbb People's avatar

The right has no shortage of gigantic liars that people fall over themselves to make excuses for. They just exist in media and politics, not academia.

Type1civilian's avatar

Yes, my comment was about academia though.

Naturally I miss my Kmele, but what fun to have an episode of Matt and Michael. If you come from a large family, you know how interestingly the dynamic changes when one or another sibling is absent. I’m glad no one was available to join you (much as I adore MKH.) Please never, ever feel pressure to get a guest. We come here to listen to you guys.

This is what I pay my sub for!

Clip Roulette is incredible!

Victor's avatar

It’s right up there with Midterm Madness

Tyler's avatar

Why not Ben Shapiro. I think you guys would have a much better interview than you’d think.

Matt Welch's avatar

We’ve asked.

Colin Blount's avatar

I concur. When I listen to Shapiro I disagree with him a ton. That said, he appears to be an honest broker of his opinions, does not seem to change them for his audience, and does not seem to distort facts. From what I know of him the gentlemen would find agreement not just on democrat lunacy but also on republican lunacy. They may struggle with the no zoom interviews, no idea if he leaves Florida much.

FloppyFrog's avatar

Given that Mamdani wants to arrest a Jew - any Jew at this point - Shapiro might be in big trouble coming to NYC for an interview

Rebecca's avatar

I like Ben, too. Has a little too much of the religion and “moral values” thing going on, but other than that he is pragmatic, reasoned and economically libertarian. Hope he reconsiders the offer. Such an entertaining show today btw (in case you’re reading, Matt- totally sucks about your dad; been there!)

My grandmother has fallen for those Democratic fundraising spam PAC messages multiple times. They are perfectly designed to fool an elderly liberal like her who has deeply internalized concerns about the Trump Administration. Doesn't matter how many times we tried to tell her to stop and that its a scam . . . the frantic PLEASE DONATE NOW OR TRUMP ENDS DEMOCRACY FOREVER!!!!!! messages are just too enticing for someone who has to feel like they're doing something.

Her health has declined recently which is sad but at least she doesn't have the mental energy to spend so much time looking at this stuff. I still worry though since its an election year.

Fuck the people doing this and fuck the NYT and The Bulwark for caving. Also fuck the Liberals/Progressives totally incapable of policing or even hearing about anything bad on their own side because Trump is always "so much worse!!!!" I suspect we'll be hearing this excuse for the next ten years or so regardless of whatever ruinous decisions President AOC is making.

Re Heriberto Padilla: he is featured prominently in Roberto Ampuero’s autobiographical novel Nuestros Años Verde Olivo (our olive green years) about his hellish time spent in Cuba in the 1970s as a young communist exile from Chile (following a short stay in East Germany) after the coup in 1973. Highly recommended.

Idh's avatar

And there is a Fifth Column connection. Ampuero was later a friend and collaborator with Mauricio Rojas, a similiarly-aged leftist activist in MIR, who fled to Sweden and eventually become a member of parliament. I believe Moynihan worked with Rojas at a think tank during his time in Sweden.

I appreciate you guys and the clip roulette is hilarious. But the poly market segments are so incredibly, incredibly boring. Please reconsider!
