I appreciate Matt's take on The Free Press. Sure, the FP has run some garbage pieces, but they've also done some excellent work. They've hired some MAGA flunkies, but they've hired plenty of staunchly anti-MAGA flunkies, too.
I guess I'm not entirely sure what line Bari or the FP has suddenly crossed. What is the *correct* amount of pro-Trump articles they should publish? One of Bari's motivations was to create a paper that more closely reflects the electorate, not just Ivy leaguers. I hate Trump as much as anyone, but half the country voted for him. Wouldn't it be weird to not see *anything* complimentary of Trump?
To borrow a phrase... What did y'all think "ideological diversity" meant? Vibes, papers, and essays, losers.
As someone who’s long-suffered with MS, I was *very* disappointed with Pesca’s appearance on the Reason Roundtable.
Harvard is NOT about to cure this damned condition. They reproduced research from other places who were trying to link the Epstein-Barr virus with the condition.
I’m in my um late 40s, and have had symptoms since around puberty. I was finally diagnosed at 30.
Guess what I’ve NEVER had — EBV.
Harvard isn’t going to fix this, regardless of how much stolen taxpayer money they get.
another good hose tyvm but here's a particularly salient point that I gleaned from the barrage herewith: Kat R. has only been a TFC guest once? WTF guys, please hit her up ASAP Dong-style with the can't-miss "what's happening, hot stuff?" (not doing the accent here that's a job better left to MM)
Kids aren’t taught math because they will need to do square roots at their future job. They are taught math in order to help them develop problem solving skills. We’ve reached a point where neither side wants anyone to actually learn because they might notice the emperor has no clothes.
But also, we need more people than ever to use advanced math to do their jobs, and advanced math requires strong foundational skills that can only be built in sequence. So we have to teach everyone those foundational math skills or nobody will have advanced math skills and China will eat our lunch.
I would just like to point out that this makes me a *two time* commenter of the week. Long time listeners may remember me telling the story (all the way back in 2023!) of how Jane Goodall taught my wife to drink scotch!
Does that make me the best Listener/Commenter? Many people are saying it!
Moynihan’s interview with Jeff Jarvis was pretty good. Then Jarvis went on about there being no liberal media anymore which led into him declaring himself a Kamala fan boy and I pretty much stopped listening after that.
Rest assured, whether some school district is saying they are or are not doing "Grading With Equity" you can be quite understood that most schools are doing some version of this. Usually this means some version of no or reduced homework loads, 55 as the floor for failing grades (for report cards only) and/or having a system where students can still do late work (even several weeks after the due date). My own principal who is a black woman, mentioned something about wanting 55 to be the floor for in class assignments, which I think is patently ridiculous since a child could just fuck off for most of the year and still pass if they put in some effort at the end. I don't think she is racist, I think she believes it is the right thing to do, but I do think she is wrong and think most teachers will agree but probably won't fight her to too much on it. These might seem like little things, but these little things grow over time and they eventually become accepted as common practice and then it is too late to turn back the clock.
What frustrates me is that most students understand school as they are there to do work that will be graded. The vast majority understand that they are to do work to learn and that if it is an assignment, I will grade it, give it back to them with notes for feedback.
One mistake made by teachers is such that giving an assignment that isn't to be graded. That's dumb. Students will not do the assignment. You have to grade everything. Most mistakes made by many teachers is usually based on bad advice given by education sites like Edutopia or by someone who writes some book about the "new thing" which isn't that new, and is usually written by someone who spent 5 minutes in a classroom in suburban Minneapolis. These mistakes are less based on "woke" thinking and more just really bad education advice.
At my own school which is in NYC and is fairly diverse (ethnically), there is a fairly uniform grading policy. As far as I understand, students are being taught math (especially since some of them believe my class is the best time for them to do their math work). My school offers advanced math classes like Pre-Calc and AP Calculus and I see no one saying that this is white supremacist or what not. I imagine this is the case for most schools.

I think Kat will only come back again if they promise to feed her this time before plying her with multiple Negronis.
I would come on the pod for negronis sans real food. Just saying

Apropos of nothing, has Mary Katherine Ham been on the show? I think she’d be a fun guest.
Twice!
I’ll have to go back through the catalogue then!
#345 & #430
Spreadsheet Matt for the win!
Also, Go Dawgs
She's the best!

Nothing at all against Moynihan here but it was a tough listen. Jarvis seems to me to be well outside the bounds of any reality I may share with him.
There is no "Waterloo" performance like the one in 'Murial's Wedding' :

We need to bring back lip syncing.
Any 2nd Sunday Zoom hang today?
I watched The Glug while enjoying a G&T.

Is Kennedy ever going to be a guest on the show?
Has been at least once!
Further thots?
