Just finished listening to Welch’s amazing TFC episode on The Beach Boys. I didn’t listen immediately because I didn’t much care for the band and didn’t understand all the “Brian Wilson is genius” stuff. Now I get it. Go listen, folks!
The music stuff isn't my favorite, but I like and appreciate that you guys occasionally do episodes about the things you love (Gotta convince Kmele to do something sometime!!!!). It can be really interesting to listen to someone who is passionate about something, even when I don't care about it in the least. I won't lie that my eyes (ears?) glaze over from time to time, but I'm not mad about it. Plus, I'm pretty sure that, given that these episodes are passion projects, I doubt they are detracting much from our more regular fare.
Kmele could do one about UFO disclosure or something. Im sure there’s enough of us that would love that. Not everyone is an anti-conspiracy theorist like Moynihan…
Speaking of garage bands…my old boss in DC stormed into my office and demanded I turn down “that noise” from my cd player. He was a Southern California man, and he told me that “those boys” practiced in his garage bcs they were friends w his son. He never wanted to hear their “music” again. It was Van Halen!
I love that in the cats & dogs downpour you (Matt) insist à la Backstreet Boys that you want it that way. Y'all are stalwart! Give you torn sheets and you could be the Deadbeat Club (à la the B-52's). Also, the wonderful Matthew Sweet just gave his first post-stroke interview to Rolling Stone (because apparently they're still good for something):
I'm on team Queen, Is It Aliens. For a little bit of surprise (glorious!) Queen backup harmonies, check out this Ian Hunter song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRkJi-QWKmg
Yeah, I was tempted to ask why you besmirched Mr. Sweet with Canuckistani heritage.
For whatever reason, his stuff has been popping up a lot on MTV Classic, and my Apple Music feeds.
He did some interesting stuff with Susanna Hoffs a few years ago (another SoCal connection)
But I’d also been paying a lot more attention to some of the early/mid 90s basic mixing stuff. Kinda started listening to Liz Phair in preparation for her “Exile In Guyville” show in DC.
You beat me to the Susanna Hoffs reference. They did three albums of remakes called Under The Covers. Great stuff.
You won't be disappointed with Liz. Saw her show last year and absolutely loved it. Another 90's indie goddess who you should check out is PJ Harvey. Her last album was hauntingly beautiful with lots of Celtic influence. On tour the first half was the new album in its entirety and then the greatest hits in the second half. She blew me away in concert 30 years ago and still brings it.
Didn’t make that clear…..this was in preparation for a show 2+ years ago. And, yeah, it was great. As someone on the tail end of Gen X, I hadn’t listened to a ton of the EIG stuff. The second and third albums got a ton of spins…..
I really dug the Brian Wilson episode and the Gen X perspective of it all. What I want to hear now is how everyone feels about Yes, Chef’s Boss impersonation?
To put the size of the WNBA in perspective, it is estimated to have made $180 to $200 million last season, which was its best financial year ever. That is less a than single college athletics powerhouse makes. The WNBA wouldn’t even make the top 12, according to the numbers in this article: https://sports.yahoo.com/texas-football-2nd-most-valuable-235535591.html . Most of that revenue is from a single sport: football. It has a tiny market, from a revenue standpoint.

I really enjoyed Roja on Moynihan’s Report. It’s always nice to learn something new on a subject, her analysis on the history of the ayatollah was enlightening. He was originally preaching on the sanctity of women being modest then realized he wasn't gaining traction, went full anti-semite and noticed he was so continued in that vein. Also the analysis on the iraq-iran war was interesting. Anyway, well worth a listen.

Agreed. I’m not a music person but it never bothers me when the boys go on about music. I figure it’s a chance to learn something.

How would Kmele do a podcast about conferences?
I was gonna guess it would be about Yeezy shoes. But then again, that's probably too traumatic for him right now.
(the real answer is probably Astronomy, but he does that stuff not on the pod I guess)

Damn, that flock of seagulls joke was sitting RIGHT THERE this whole time. Good job, Matt.

Seconded. Their Under the Covers albums are great.

Matt looking gangsta and I'm here for it.
Good looking crew!
His daughter is such a cutie and obviously a good sport 💜
Punched one of the playlists at random and was greeted with Dead Moon. Matt really showing off his PNW bonafides.
