I'm not a YouTube fan. I've been a paid subscriber since day one of Patreon. I've been NFC for two years, but I'm considering dropping back down, since YouTube does not offer the same intimate feeling as Zoom does. That platform probably gives you more exposure, but it's a lower quality experience for me.

Part of what’s always made TFC special is the ‘family’ atmosphere (which the Zoom environment plays to). Maybe that will be lost as the guys’ audience grows ever larger. 😔 I hope not, but maybe it’s inevitable.

Norm Benson's avatar

It seems inevitable. The YouTube experience yesterday (the tech difficulties not withstanding) gets a one-star review from me. It was a poorer version of their episodes where they read our letters. Yeah, their new digs are neat for them, and I'm glad they're successful (MCM needs to buy more used car parts) but...we listened for the content, not the quality of their recording. In podcasts, content is king. Sessions around the "stupid table" were better. The new studios with the room for small events is cool and all for New Yorkers, but their listeners are worldwide.

And "the stupid table" episodes.

So wait. I've paid for NFC literally to support your work with literally NOTHING back (no tshirt, no cap; in fact I MADE bags, caps, beer koozies of my own and gave them away to other fan friends in Chicago), wasn't quick enough to snag the honor or buying merch (fine), but I should "chip in" just to make a comment? The actual fuck, guys? Not to ask for some vitriol from Matt, but shit. What a huge disappointment.

Christ, Dacia, we’re just experimenting with shit! Email me your address.

Matt Welch's avatar

And to be more explicit: This experiment in particular, as well as things happening offscreen (such as the way we are designing our new recording studio), are being done with an explicit eye toward creating more NFC-only products and opportunities. OG NFC’ers, with the exception of those living in some places overseas, should’ve gotten some of our swag mailed years ago; anyone who has not can send me an email at mleewelch@gmail.com w/ date of NFC onset & we’ll see what we can do.

And, as a result of this discussion, let's try something that's *not* readily indicatable on the prior Second Sunday Zoom calls. If you are Never Fly Coach, simply begin your LiveChat Q with "NFC: ...." You will be prioritized accordingly.

It definitely seems a bit thirsty, but, whatever. Try things in the market and the market will choose what appeals to the broadest set of customers.

I, personally, have no use for video - I'm an audio listener only, and not - currently - NFC. And I'm also usually busy doing family stuff on Sundays, so I'm not gettable (probably) anyway.

Paying for queue jumping questions seems a bit silly, but if they make this one available to the non-live listeners, I'll be curious to see how it turns out. The boys don't owe me anything - I'll be a paid listener for as long as I enjoy or feel I benefit from the show.

If that changes, my choices may change. All good.

That's my six cents (inflation) take it for what it's worth :-)

Damn, Matt. I'm familiar with Bert Jansch and John Renbourn and Ralph McTell and many of the others of the Great British Folk Music Outbreak. How did I miss Wizz Jones? What a great song! Thanks for sharing. That'll be stuck in my head for a while.

Man, I loved Pentangle, Steeleye Span, and Fairport Convention. I still put their LP's on occasionally.

That Abby Phillip clip is wild. That Joe Borelli guy says that the cop who shot Ashli Babbitt “escalated” the situation because, after all she was just going through a door. You know who I think escalated things- the guy who tweeted-

“Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!”

That tweet was 20 minutes before Babbitt was killed. A riot had already been declared. Security was scrambling to hide the vice president during this period.

It’s always seemed like there are two defensible responses (for Trump supporters) to the events of this day-

1) The election WAS stolen so this was all an appropriate response. Moynihan (not Lydia- she’s a dum dum) has made this point. If you believed the election was being stolen, you might go to any lengths to prevent it. Fine. Whatever.

2) This is the one you never hear- Jan. 6 was truly terrible in every respect. Trump’s behavior was abysmal, but I think he’s learned his lesson and nothing like that will happen again.

Ok…cool. Well, we now know, based on the White House Website, that Trump hasn’t backed off of this bullshit at all. It’s really unbelievable at this point. Some people cannot be helped.

I only made it halfway through the Abby Phillips clip because of the folks talking over each other makes it impossible to understand / reason through any of the points they are trying to make. Sad.

Borelli and Ms Moynihan … boy, very frustrating. They just couldn’t say “it’s not true.” I wonder, if they say that, does the segment end?

Because I’m kind of sympathetic to the what-about-ist (but I think important, media criticism) point Borelli was trying to make. “Just so we’re clear, when anti-ICE protesters approach the police barricades and the police respond with tear gas, you *won’t* think the police are “escalating the violence”?

The interview with de Blasio was a reasonable discussion

Rebecca Hunter's avatar

I respectfully disagree. At one point in the discussion Moynihan stated that they have diametrically different positions on the idea that rent freezes lead to an increase of cheaper housing, but discussing that would be boring. Actually asking de Blasio to defend the lunacy of rent freezes and how that would lead to an increase of affordable housing, would have been way less boring than listening to De Blasio drone on about how much he “helped people” in NYC.

squarooticus's avatar

If someone were going to disabuse De Blasio of his economic illiteracy, it would have happened by now. Having Moynihan repeatedly hit him over the head with the clue stick would not be especially interesting, IMO.

Justin, History Sage's avatar

I didn't say it was the perfect interview. A deeper defense of rent freezes from Bill would have been good though since I do not really understand how that is good for the economy (I assume it isn't)

Based on the comments here, the fellas are gonna get labeled sell outs soon! Haha. Like many of your favorite bands and children, it is bittersweet watching your favorite things evolve.

Does the tomato look like the Virgin Mary or something? I didn't see an explanation.

Chris R's avatar

They (Matt?) have a habit of posting seemingly random photos without explanation. It's effing annoying. Maybe some sort of inside baseball, or IYKYK, but it's just plain rude to those of us not in the know.

How are we gonna see beautiful babies during second Sunday?

Norm Benson's avatar

Yeah. YouTube is less interactive. It is less intimate than Zoom, which for all its faults, allows more interaction and discussion between you (Matt, Moyn, and Kmele) and us. Even Two-Way would be better than YouTube, imho, and Two-Way is less intimate than YouTube. The change is being greeted less than warmly in the WhatsApp community if I'm reading all the posts there correctly.

Matt Welch's avatar

Well, then that's one result of the experiment! Look, we're trying new stuff, and possible improvements/additions, and NOT suddenly busting out the NEW WAY WE DO THINGS, FOREVER. Second Sunday has always been a challenge to manage, not only because of tech, but because there are about 5 different strongly held consumer beliefs about it, and several of them contradict.

Norm Benson's avatar

I get it. There are no solutions, only tradeoffs and you want to get your best tradeoff.

To me, the move to YouTube is a step down since I see YouTube's offering for live chats to be a modest step above X's Spaces. I will remain a paid subscriber (and I've been a paid subscriber since day one on Patreon), but I will judge in March--when my NFC subscription comes up for renewal--whether this change is worth it to me. Hey, I'm 75. I'm not exactly your desired demographic. I also may not be around for your 20th anniversary.

Norm Benson's avatar

Welp, it was certainly less interactive. I could not even use the chat. It said it was in "Subscriber-Only mode." I was logged into Substack, so what was the deal?

I made a parody video in honor of Nick Shirley. I think Matt would appreciate:

Can someone clip Kmele singing "Poison?" Bel Biv Devoe. It feels.... appropriate for their divorce from MK.

Ellie H's avatar

I think I missed an announcement? Only recently rejoined and I’m not sure when that happened. Can you help me out?

Jessemy's avatar

The guys won't be regular guests on Megyn Kelley anymore.

Ellie H's avatar

Thanks - did they announce that on an episode?

Jessemy's avatar

I can't remember where I saw it. Oh, I think Yael mentioned in on Substack notes after one of the Zoom hangs with the guys.
