I agree that Willie Nelson is well loved. A very lefty guy politically, but he gets a pass from most folks. He has recorded a homophobic anthem (Aint Going down on Brokeback Mountain) and one that does the other way (Cowboys are Frequently Secretly fond of Each Other). Not many seemed to give him grief for either song.
I wonder about Miley Cyrus. She’s only in her 30’s and she has nothing approaching Dolly’s origin or her insane musical output. That said, she is Dolly’s Goddaughter and has a record of charitable giving. She has my pick as a dark horse.
McConaughey is close to embodying some of what we loved about Dolly, apolitical and great on interviews. He has a philanthropic organization targeting kids but that as yet is a far cry from Parton. Where he’ll likely fall short is that film still has nothing on music to move the masses in my opinion.
Small critique, I think Jeff Bridges is underrated on your list Matt but sadly unlikely to reach Parton’s status given age and health.
Basically there is no other Dolly Parton I can see, she was unique. I happened to embark on a road trip two days ago. So far we have crossed 5 states. Seeing the flag at half staff across all of those states (minus one confederate flag flying fuck who apparently missed the memo) has been surprisingly bitter sweet. Mostly sweet. Also, if many-hour Hindi flicks rev your engines, may I suggest Lagaan? Some Indian farmers learn cricket to play the local colonial forces in a match to determine tax bills or relief of tax burdens. There is signing, dancing, romance, a white savior, and an extended cinematic cricket match. One million out of ten, no notes.
