Petty stares right into the camera and you can tell he's thinking, you have no idea the hellfire that is about to rain down on you, you terrorist bastards, and I'm going to celebrate every second of it.

You have to look closely to actually see his lip sneer, but his eyes have a way of being dead and burning with fire at the same time. It’s the exact mix you’d have for a grieving widower looking at the man who took his wife from the world.

I need this performance. This anniversary was going to be a dark one before the news broke. I was comforted to hear so many people say so.

I think maybe this is some inside baseball. I had never seen Petty perform until watching this video, and I couldn't see anything specific. If Matt hadn't said this was from a 9/11 benefit performance, I would never have guessed that in a million years.

I'm entirely willing to believe it's obvious by comparison to his normal visage.

Yeah, we’re familiar with this song, his performance of it, his usual vibe.

Groove Tube is a wild one. Turned me into a big Curtis Mayfield fan as a kid. And the Koko skit remains genius.

It was also my first introduction to Mayfield!

This was one of a number of movies (like Bakshi’s Heavy Traffic) I watched repeatedly at a wildly inappropriate age because my stepfather had a ton of random VHS stuff he’d recorded off pay cable at some point. Needless to say, I am now a warped movie nerd.

Speaking of, you should talk those guys into actually watching Queimada, what a film.

My fave is the one-minute long sketch about Barbie and Ken, I mean Babs and Roy. "Roy tells Jim that the marriage was a failya because neither he nor Babs has any genitalia."

I’m a quite recent subscriber, but Andrew’s name sounded familiar. Sure enough, I looked back and I had thanked him for assembling Matt’s Aug 7 Real Time comments on Vimeo for us. I was impressed that he’d gone to the effort of performing this seemingly random act of kindness. Of course, I’ve since learned there was nothing random about it. The tributes have been truly moving. I’ve never taken claims of the existence of meaningful online “communities” seriously before, but thanks to people like Andrew, my cynicism must bow to what you’ve created here. May Andrew’s memory be a blessing

It was an excellent 2nd Sunday today. Long but well crafted and insightful. When I left NYC in 1990 after running out of $$$ for my NYU edu. (And the damned club kids started to take over all the fun places years before Alig and Riggs would cut up Angel in a bathtub in the lower east side and bring that misery movement to a close) Disco Blood Bath anyone? Anyways the purpose of this long winded is to state I would see and run into Deedee ramone, Johnny Thunders and Cheetah all the time in my adventures in nyc in the late 80's until I left in 90, none where in good condition. Scrap Bar was always a time . Today we lose one of the few left from my era Cheetah Chrome of the Dead Boys. Bought that 1st Lp "Youbg Loud and Snotty" (I will put I need Lunch" up against any tripe people call Punk from 90's on) when I was 1o years old in 1978 and couldn't get enough of it. Sept is really starting to suck a lot more the older I get.

Love those clips of Kmele. The one from the Kmele Show was good, but I really liked the one from Table for Five, starring Kmele, Kmele, Kmele, Kmele, and—wait for it— KMELE!

Does Kmele ever let anyone get a word in edgewise? 😂😂😂

Good firehose, Matt!
