Ah, too bad that 2nd Sunday is only for NFC class, of which I am not yet, or I could share with you, Matt, how I came to have a cup of coffee with Vaclav Havel. I think about that every time I see him over your shoulder. But I guess it will wait for another Sunday.
Attending the event was a special treat that made my week. New acquaintances were formed, interests were piqued and many, MANY laughs were had. Thanks so much! 🙂
Yes it does embarrass me that the most positive takeaways I will have from all of the work that went into these weekend updates will all be about KMW's hair.🤩
Wondering what it means to be somewhere between rolling eyes & a tinge of nausea on the TDS scale, seems like my case isn't 100% fatal and hopefully I'm in some good company here
Thanks again to you all for doing the event with Pesca, it was a fun evening and a good discussion (and I appreciate a little gentle pushback on him from Matt about the NYT). I hope it'll be reprised again sometime, and I also hope I'm not banned from the venue for standing on their pillar banquette (as a 5'2" photographer I've been putting myself in inappropriate positions for years working to get the shot :)
So there's some other alert listener named Bill D. adding value to these proceedings? This aggression will not stand, man.
Just kidding. There's always room for one more.
You can get Roy Scheider's take on the now-excised French Connection scene at about the 37:40 point of the documentary 'A Decade Under the Influence,' below. Or rather, his experience watching the movie with an audience. The whole doc is worth a watch, if you're into that sort of thing.
In regard to the Sullivan letter about Trump comparing himself to George Washington: This was a line said in obvious jest. He’s said something similar many times to needle the press and left.
Reporter: Do you associate yourself with any famous historical figures?
Trump: Yeah, I’d say George Washington, Abraham Lincoln…I would say I’m far superior to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Now, you know I’m only kidding, right? Because when I say that, the fake news is going to go wild. They’re going to say, “He considers himself to be better than Washington.” But you never know. Uh, I don’t compare myself to anybody. I just have…I’m here to do a job…”
Seems like evidence of a blind spot to get something this basic wrong.
If any of the bootleg merch transactions having eves dropped on them were mine, I should clarify that I was purely in gifting mode: no money was requested or accepted!
Totally forgot about this interview until I was reminded of that scene in The French Connection, but here is the late, great Roy Scheider talking about that very scene in Ted Demme's (also RIP) awesome 2003 documentary "A Decade Under the Influence." Probably the greatest doc ever made on 70s Hollywood.
As Roy's comment makes clear, it was an artistically and culturally revolutionary moment in 1971 to have a cop on screen verbalize what most cops thought and said to each other privately back in the day. This is obviously lost on modern critics, whose views nowadays can often be summed up by asking, "How does this make ME look good on social media?"
For the Eli Lake fans, he was on Ask a Jew this week 🙌🏼 https://open.substack.com/pub/askajew/p/the-zionist-case-for-ukraine
Arch this may be your best one yet!!!! Love it
Arch's YouTube channel has 51 subscribers? C'mon, man. Help a brother out, fifdom.

TBF, it's not much of a story.

I appreciate the Dylan allusion—obvious enough to people like me, subtle enough for the haters not to notice.

For those who refuse to fly coach, should we expect to see a link for 2nd Sunday show up later?
Yes, and associated email.

Lovely meeting so many people there. ❤️
Thomas Chatterly?
My first thought 😂
I was hoping to hear from our resident TFC (and AAJ) guest-guesser! 💕
I am shamed and yet undeterred by my very confident, very wrong guess for the last Very Special Guest.
Awfully long odds, but my money's on Nikole Hannah.

Aww…dang it! I kept forgetting for the last two second Sundays! I’m sadly not a NFC.
Has Pogue ever been a guest on the show?
