Hey Zoom peeps: We -- by which I mean Kmele and Michael -- are running a little late. Soon!

Matt Welch's avatar

"Start time closer to 11:20," says Kmele. Also, Michael almost got into a fistfight looking for parking, apparently.

AW's avatar

How on brand 😆

DMC's avatar

20 minutes? Does this mean Kmele will "Have to get out of here" 5 minutes in or did He already go?

Matt Kentner's avatar

She must of been ugly.

Michael Padden's avatar

Is 11:20 when Kmele's Uber Fly comes in?

Alexandria Crow's avatar

Has the zoom link been sent? I've been having all sorts of issues with Substack emails not coming through this morning.

Thanks for the shout out to Jesse! I'm putting the final touches on my First Year Seminar syllabi, and this is a good reminder why I have a "Credibility in Reading and Writing in an Era where Even the Fact Checkers Need to be Checked" assignment. I read Jesse's detailed piece last night, and it was shocking how shady Katz et. al were!

AH's avatar

I haven't made The Fifth Column or BARpod part of the syllabus, but they are definitely extra credit opportunities (Unherd as well) that have piqued the curiousity of the young ones!

Sionann Monroe's avatar

Well I guess that means I’m going to 9am mass. See you tomorrow, lads!

The flounceposting out of the SAN camp is just icing on the already sweet cupcake for me. Is it possible they’re all this myopic and self interested AND ruthless?? (yes, yes I know it is.) This rhetoric is ALWAYS diversionary bullshit! If you have to say you’re popular, you’re not; if you have to say you’re not jealous, you are; and if you break up with your ex by telling an aggrandizing story about how you found someone actually a lot better and you’re actually going to be a lot happier, you didn’t and you won’t. And everyone listening to you KNOWS IT!!

Sorry for the rant. This is the only piece of internet I can even sort of abide interacting with and that’s been gurgling in me for a couple days. Thanks Matt et al for doing what you do, and the rest of you for being here. 0.5 months of this year down and it’s already a scorcher! Let’s keep each other going 🩷🩷

>> Let’s keep each other going

Hear, hear. Please, I’m counting on that.

The ones who are off to self-host are the funniest. They have *no idea* how difficult it is for a random website to keep a couple thousand identical mails to gmail or a Microsoft-hosted domain from generating a perma-blackhole.

Adam Kind's avatar

Is that a presidential bumper sticker that says “KMELE. Don’t worry, he’s not black” ?!?

Stasi Call Center's avatar

I thought it read: KMELE. Don't worry, he's not here.

JimF's avatar

Surely the period in that bumpersticker text should be an exclamation point?

If your newsletter don't have Mojo Nixon then your newsletter could use some fixin'.

My favorite of his, from when he and Jello Biafra made a weird alt country album:

Matt Welch's avatar

This is real solid.

Randolph Carter's avatar

As a big Dead Kennedys fan I heard this before I heard the original Phil Ochs version. Although I think Ice T got off a bit easier than Malcom X thank you very much Mr. Biafra

Andrew Wimsatt's avatar

Great album, and I saw Mojo and Jello perform live during SXSW 1994 in support of that album! A clip from that performance is in the "Mojo Manifesto" documentary. Here's a photo from IG

😮 I am so envious of all the people who got to see amazing live music in 1994/the early-mid 90s when I was busy being 10 years old. My friend's dad took us to see Sugar Ray and 311 when I was 12 though, so I've got that going for me 😂

Randolph Carter's avatar

Oh boy and as I'm relistening to this album, I am reminded of how incredibly cancelled those two would be if any young people were cool enough to like them

My dearly departed dad used to play Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper in the truck. Thanks for the flashback. The fact that you guys drop references to someone like Mojo Nixon is one of the (many) reasons I love this place.

My all-time favorite Mojo Nixon-ism. "Mutants" always killed me.

Anyone who goes to Second Sunday and not church is a heathen ✨

ChayaLeah's avatar

Sunday is not a holy day 😉😉

Dacia's avatar

My dad defines church as a morning walk with the dogs up in the Wallowas. My friend Megan defines it as "Mimosas at the Boatyard Cafe", while another defines it as "still asleep" - my daughter concurs with the latter. As for me, I sit in stillness with coffee and my dog as he lays in the morning sun in the backyard.

Lots of ways to show praise for still breathing and limbful.

Vigil mass baby! Done and ready to fif

Dacia's avatar

I should try to rally for that shit every once in. I do love our priest - caught him surrounded by empty pints at our local pizza place a few months back. I like him.

Jaye BM's avatar

I will be late because I CARE about my sin’s forgiveness 😤

If you choose god over this podcast you’re doing like, number 7 on the top 10 biggest no no list

Matt Welch's avatar

God's there all day, Jaye.

Rageforthemachine's avatar

Actually I think he has been slipping out early lately and expecting others to cover for him.

Mr. Yale's avatar

And on the Second Sunday, God said, “Where’s the Zoom link?”

On the 8th day, god sent a zoom link

"Euro-Middle Easterners" sounds like a slur antisemites use.

TheNuclearBlonde's avatar

Next to "white Hispanics"

I’m only halfway through BARPod’s new episode about the Substack Nazis and already aghast at how dishonest Katz has been. Good job, Jesse.

Sally Jane's avatar

For real! His reporting is so thorough! And while The Atlantic’s response to Jesse is not surprising, it’s still just...ugh! 😖 If they want to publish a smarmy writer like Katz, that’s their prerogative, but at least keep the guy’s writing honest. I just don’t get it.

Rageforthemachine's avatar

The racist site? I think the FDA allows a greater percentage of rat poop in our hot dogs than Substack has racists on its platform. Another example of woke hysteria being totally unrelated to any reality that is actually going on in the world.

AW's avatar

I can't even tell if the Taylor Lorenz on Twitter is a parody account or actually her. Crazy, and exhausting.

Lesley's avatar

8am PST?!? 🥱💤

TheNuclearBlonde's avatar

Is it gauche to put ones earbuds in at a three year olds birthday party? Asking for a friend

Michael's avatar

Will there be a zoom link posted here? -fellow luddite

Matt Welch's avatar

That is how it traditionally goes, yes.

Mr. Yale's avatar

Clubhouse users are having “unfettered conversations”...Joe Rogan is a “right-winger”...Twitter under Elon Musk’s ownership allows “misinformation” to spread...Substack has a “nazi problem”....

Anything and anyone the establishment and legacy media can’t control, they seek to destroy.

Mr. Yale's avatar

“If you would have told me back in 1986, when I first started typing articles, that there would totally be a category within the profession fairly characterizable as Journalists for Censorship, I would have sent Mojo Nixon over to knock some sense in you. Bad for speech, bad for political discourse, bad for journalism.”

Woman-child Taylor Lorenz is the perfect avatar for journavists (credit: Bridget Phetasy) in print. On the broadcasting end, Ben Collins, a complete tool, fills that role. These people are not just unethical, they’re insufferable.
