I direct those who want to hear Kat’s perspective in addition to reading her post to listen to her synopsis on the latest Feminine Chaos. (First though, a crestfallen PMB musing why the NYT published a long column that never once referenced the whole damned book on the topic by Phoebe that came out just last month… which really does sound like some mean-girling by the Times/columnist.)
I am thankful for the 5th for two reasons this week. That for every guest like Chris Murphy, we get a Noah Rothman or a Bridget Phetasy(hint) and a great non guest episode like we got this week. The other reason is Matt's word Smithers. With a gem like Bonus points if he works in your profession and carries on like a self-important jackass. Schadenfreude is a dish best served daily, and if America is rich enough to give around $7 million a year to not one but three different humans who have a job the Brits accurately call “newsreader,” then certainly we have more than paid for the right to laugh like pitiless hyenas at the sight of the great Dan Rather.." 😂✊️
This was a cracker of a Firehose. I can totally hear Cathy Young's snarky comment about Kat said aloud in her deeply irritating voice. After all these years, I still hold Cathy in the top 5 most annoying guests I've ever heard. I'll bet Coleman has PTSD.
Matt, you may recall "Art Talk with Edward Goldman" on KCRW, hosted by a guy with the thickest possible Russian accent, but who clearly had a seriously fluent command of English... but for some reason never thought to make himself more understandable. Young is the same. She makes Yglesias sound like Raymond Burr. Her name alone leads you to the ultimate bait-and-switch experience. I couldn't resist the opportunity to bitch in this safe space. Sorry/not sorry. I stand with Kat.
One thing I definitely picked up at a very young age was how much journalists(and weirdly especially news anchors) held themselves in immensely high esteem.
I clicked on Matt’s Reason article about America 250. I was going to leave a nice comment. But then I read the comments (for the first time as a few-years Reason subscriber). Holy Hell. Nope. I’m not entering that fray. I’ll just say here, loved the article, Matt!
The 60 Minutes story is being covered 'like it's the Yalta Conference.' Which tells you more about how media sees itself than it tells you about what actually happened. The press has a martyr complex. The White House has a control problem. Both things are true and neither side wants to hear it. I wrote about this last week. Put a little bit of a different spin on it.. but always count on the fifth column to present a point everyone in my publication breaks my balls for presenting. BDS. Lol.
I watched Cannibal Holocaust during a trip to China 20 years ago. I was bumming around the streets of Shanghai and saw those street vendors selling case-less DVDs for about $1 each. This was back in the glory days of Chinese bootlegging, which, I’ve been told is no longer as widespread. So given I was solo traveling at the time I ponied up a few bucks and grabbed a handful of movies, including the infamous cannibal classic. I went back to my hotel that evening and slide the DVD into my laptop (back when laptops had built-in disc players) with trembling hands anticipated the gore and disgust about to come. I was both disappointed and pleasantly surprised when in fact this film did NOT live up to the bloody hype. Sure, it had some scenes of animals being killed and very fake human deaths, but overall it was actually a well made and interesting found footage movie — made years before Blair Witch Project. It’s definitely one of those films that has a reputation that conjures up the worst in one’s mind but doesn’t deliver, should you have an appetite for that kind of stuff. I’d give it 6/10.
“the Trump administration’s pressure on media companies has been godawful” - this is true. And it’s why to me it will forever disqualify Trump as an even remotely good American president. Man has not moral compass. No principles. And no ethics. And while some “men” think that’s “cool” I do not. It’s childish and embarrassing and shows that our current president is a literal nitwit.
Never apologize for the length of a Firehouse post. Ever. More high-quality content is never a bad thing and if people can't be bothered to read to the end they can fuck right off.

First off, Matt, the title of this Firehose is *chef's kiss*
The contents of this Firehouse also reminds me of Iowahawk's classic observation:
"Journalism is about covering important stories. With a pillow, until they stop moving."

Oh this broad and her fucking 60’s song, let it go already lady!
Trying to stage an event to cover it smdh
Chris Murphy is like if not having a sense of proportion were a person

Wow, my favorite Firehose yet!

Thank you! Never read Teadon comments!
Or Reason….

Riz Ortolani also provided the scoring for another shock fest, from the 60s, Mondo Cane.
A lot of Bulwark/Unpopulist types are incapable - to their great shame - of distinguishing between Trump apologia and Trump-voter apologia.

The lefties losing a fairly big one, CBS News to the centrists, is not a "lucrative mistake."
I’m talking about from Bari’s POV.
Perhaps a throw away line, but Matt absolutely nails it with the barb making reference to the British penchant for calling them “newsreaders” ❤️
I had never thought about it that way before.
Fucking right! They just read a teleprompter ffs! 😂
