That Primo study commissioned by FIRE is absolutely nuts. And yet there are people who still deny faculty bias, or (perhaps more infuriatingly) suggest that it's the result of a "tRuTh BiAs".
Just to add that I logged into my lurker Twitter account just to read some of Charlie Cooke's replies, and... well, let me just say he has the patience of a saint to even bother. Engaging with relentless and willful stupidity must be like trying to swim up a waterfall. That kind of ignorance is why I have mostly checked out of social media. Fuck that noise. The number of times I've posted some variant of "Musk couldn't get anywhere near $1T in cash: it's all bound up in the value of the companies he runs and reflects his willingness to continue doing so" to a chorus of socialists howling like baboons and demonstrating zero curiosity about how the world got all that great tech they enjoy pales in comparison to Cooke's Sisyphean efforts, and yet even *I* am tired of it.
I can never seem to make the Second Sundays because I choose to play touch rugby on Sunday mornings. But that said, you do them when you do them for reasons likely because it's Sunday and y'all got kids (and some of you need to sleep off your hangovers).
Walking around my school, I am amazed at the lack of American flags. Not a single classroom has an American flag. There are flags for other countries, but not American. As a kid I could remember virtually every classroom having an American flag. My first years teaching in the city, most classrooms had one. At this school, there are flags for the school, with the school name on them. But that's it. They used to put up Pride flags during Pride month but that's noticeably died down. Maybe it's an expense issue, flags can be expensive. In my room I have an American flag poster, which, at this point I have taken nearly everything down, except Old Glory.
Now, I'm not one of these teachers who is "ra-ra America" that thinks we need to incorporate the 1776 curriculum (unless it were loosely based on the musical) but we could do with a little more patriotism in our schools. Personally, my sense of patriotism is tied to our beautiful land and the ideals that form our foundational understandings and is not vested in who is occupying the Presidential Mansion at any time or another.
I was lucky to visit La Sagrada Familia when I went to Barcelona. At first, I didn't really appreciate it and it was only on a bike tour when a very spirited guide expressed the love she had for it that I understood the appeal.
Regarding the World Cup, I have little interest in soccer (this is more of a test run for the Rugby World Cup in 2031), but I really love the Europeans seeing our great country and having a great time. I have nothing to add other than what's already been said.
Good to see you playing touch. When I was a kid we played every lunchtime, often after school, and on the weekends (boarding school). It’s a reason Australia dominated rugby in the backs for so many years. Incredible skills development.
I’ve lived on 6 of the continents. I lived in South Africa During Apartheid. I had New Zealand residency. I fought a spider monkey (and survived cholera) in Belize. I stood out like a pale, hairy thumb in Japan. I’ve seen Ireland dirt poor and pretending to not be poor, but just expensive.
I wouldn’t say I’m proud to be American- but it’s where I choose to live. Over everywhere else. Recently I’m wavering. The only solace I have is knowing all those places are worse in their own ways…
I've always felt that "proud to be an American" was a silly concept for those who've known nothing else. In some sense, simply remaining in a country is an assertive choice but it's really the bare minimum from which one can draw pride. Many (not you!) loudly claim pride in America without ever considering anything else let alone experiencing it.

I was excited to see the listen option and listened which is not as delightful as your own voice Matt Welch. I am often doing things and listening so I miss these firehose posts.
I mentioned this on the Navarro show but seeing Her again here made me want t state again that she is Grace Pander, In 1975 Death Race 2000, the television personality uses the phrase "dear dear friend of mine" over and over just like your batty friend here Anna. It’s excellent fun and easy cardio. I’ve played union for about 30 years but I think I’m done and quite enjoy the playing (and bevvies after)
