I have a mix of popular songs in their original language before they were covered and translated. I joked that the entire difference between French and American culture can be explained by how Claude François‘ Comme d’habitude was translated into My Way. The French original is about a marriage slowly falling apart and everyone’s going through the motions. The American version is about WINNING.
Oooh, thanks. AXL! These look fun. When I first heard Comme d’Habitude (a French friend introduced me to it), it blew my mind. I’d grown up with a Sinatra-loving father but Comme is so much better.
Yes! The original version of Gloria they mentioned, comme d’habitude, Io Che non vivo (later covered as you don’t have to say you love me by Dusty Springfield), Julio Iglesias’s version of La mer (beyond the sea), major tom by Peter Schilling, and a few others. I’ll look it up for you.
So far as I can tell, it's not actually unintelligible but rather just deeply retarded in the way of much critical-postmodern political science academia. By my read, the layers of abstraction are:
1. (Normal good lib take) Putin is Bad & the Ukrainians deserve our sympathy.
2. (Nonsensical leftist negation) Actually, giving the Ukrainians sympathy exposes our hypocrisies since we don't give similar sympathies to war refugees from the Global South. Therefore, we can be angry about the Poles & Ukrainians getting along and unsympathetic to their plight.
3. (DAC's negation of the negation) We already knew the hypocrisy would happen, that the West would be nicer to white refugees than black ones, because the entire International Order is racist & prejudiced against the Global South. By virtue of playing into this dynamic, Putin's war in Ukraine becomes an amplifier & contributor to Global Racism (the only truly-existing evil) and as such, indeed Bad.
The upshot is that she can maintain the normie lib "Putin Bad" take, but doesn't have to be sympathetic to anyone who's white and can instead claim that all the badness is derived from the war's "long-lasting and unimaginable consequences for the Global South." What a joke.
It does the thing all this nonsense “academic” nonsense does. Takes one specific thing. And compare it to a very very non specific thing and then say “these things are obviously the same. We should treat them the same.”
"Make a bet... I mean investment..." When you can't honestly advertise something, maybe don't advertise it or take their money? It's gambling. I honestly don't care if you want to partner or advertise or whatever, but if you have to lie about what it is, that's not great.
Maybe I’m a little more hostile. I would say the Polymarket shill segment gets stupider every week. This week we are just fully pretending a bunch of degenerate gamblers are a data source

The stuff about TSA precheck really makes me realize what a bubble these people are in.
The Google Gemini Robot tells me that half of Americans don't fly at all in an average year, and most of the ones who do do it once or twice a year. The reason that they aren't paying for PreCheck or Clear isn't because they can't afford it, it's because it's not worth it when you only are flying once a year.
It reminds me a lot of Biden's odd obsession with resort fees. Sure, they are annoying and deceptive, but if you travel to resorts enough to care about them you aren't having trouble putting food on the table or gas in your car.
I only fly a few times a year and I am someone who enjoys travel. It just doesn't make sense to me pay for something I am going to use a few times. If I were in business and had to travel often, then yes I would use it.
I was 10 when my father bought our first color TV for my mother in 1971. The first movie she watched was “The Priest Killer” with Raymond Burr and George Kennedy. My first time flying (on an airplane) was a trip home from college in the 80s on a $49 RT People Express flight from NY to Boston. TFC: Come for the cathartic commentary, stay for the nostalgia.
Don’t worry Michael. I spent hundreds of dollars to send my daughter to the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia to volunteer. It must be a Catholic school thing.
I would also recommend again that you guys get Jay Nordlinger on. He has an excellent interview podcast (Q&A) and he was also a close friend of WFB's and has a lot of great stories and insights about him. I would love to hear the three of you sit down with him.
The Die Antwoord party story was the best of the series and the animation they did for it was really good. They used my art work for a “Kool Keith” party story which was one of the lamest party stories ever animated.
I’m with Moynihan on Mamdani’s bullshit smile. It has always reminded me of a cartoon wolf. Dude comes across as sincere as Tucker Carlson to me.
It’s shmarmy political navigator 101.

I don’t have it in Spotify, but I should. But I’m sharing one of my other favorite similar mixes, which is songs that are more famous as hip-hop samples. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6Jw19cnd6gogLKorHFHKXI?si=XlAZspEfSzKu_iThz63ymQ&pi=kZsUVCF-TvSmt

@AXL would you share that song list? Sounds fun.

I think this is the DAC writing Moynihan refers to: https://cuny.manifoldapp.org/read/our-conjurings/section/cc14823d-020e-4be5-89cb-af2e98648030#5eabfd5e793eb90914b96e1fbb46bda0

Lemme fix this...

Tainted Love - the original by little known Gloria Jones.

That’s the exact song I came here to mention. Great version.

"like, such as" this is superb stitching producer Jason

i know I’m a hillbilly when I think “David Allen Coe” every time I hear you guys say “DAC”.
You don’t have to call me “darlin’l
Take this job and…
I am bummed that the "notorious DAC" now stands for Darializa Avila Chevalier and not the actually notorious David Allan Coe (rip).
He also wrote and recorded the original version of "Tennessee Whiskey."

I also agree that Mamdani is a detestable bullshit artist whose supposed charms are utterly lost on me 🙋♀️
Most people aren't aware Thee signature one-hit wonder is a remake. Tonl Basil's Mickey is a remake of the Racey song Kitty.
Wait — did I miss the calling out we were promised? Or were second thoughts had
Same question - though I guessed it was the Chevalier discussion? But man, talk about shooting fish in a barrel.
