I have to imagine the crossover isn’t insignificant. Wish they’d offer a bundle and quarterly review with each other.
It’s different vibes, but having the fifth guys respond to the over arching societal impact of the internet BS of the times and pushing Jess and Katie to be a little more rigorous would be interesting on all sides.
Bari should roll both shows up into CBS/The Free Press/Paramount Skydance and give them a prime time panel TV show that will shock and offend her elderly viewers.
We give money to the UAE, who support the RSF is Sudan who have killed at least twice as many (low end estimate, high end is close to half a million) Sudanese as Palestinians. Not one fuck from the Team Genocide side has said fuck all about this. Because they don’t care, it’s just blind hatred for the Joozians
I think this logic is kind of hilarious, because what people like Jesse are saying is that if the US didn't give Israel money, they would no longer care about Israel or gaza or any of it. And that's just patently false. They would still care.
Enjoyed the science talk. It reinforces that Woodrow Wilson and the Progressives were so wrong. We need to stop allowing unelected experts in agencies to enact policies. They should only advise Congress on policy.
Also, Kmele is trying to pretend he doesn’t know what the fox says? He’s as believable as Fauci. Didn’t he admit to keeping a diary, too?
The thing is, Congress has the power to make and revise all those fiddly little rules. In fact, under one theory of the Constitution, their delegation of that power to executive-branch administrative agencies was and remains illegal. However, at this point congress does not exist as a body to make laws and consider policy. At this point, congress exists as a combination insider-trading scheme and AAA-developmental league for cable news pundits, lobbyists, and executive branch officials.
Yall had to trigger me with the C word and the F word didn’t ya?! I will not be posting a rant here. Just know, most criticism of Fauci and the way COVID was handled is super easy to criticize in hindsight as we all accept the sudden willful amnesia we have sustained about what was going on during that time. And that’s all I’m gonna say until my book comes out!
Really? At the time I remember saying “boy. It’s real cruel to make some families not be able to see each other in the hospital” and I wasn’t confused at all by it. And some states did ban emergency room visits and family advocacy in the way. So. I dunno. Some people I guess were more confused than others.
It killed my father. So I dunno. Maybe it wasn’t the most prudent when it seemed like it was pretty easy to test and mask up a person. But hey. The monsters we were for wanting to see my father as the nursing facility he was in for rehab after he broke his hip allowed an infection in his foot to reach the bone and require skin grafts. All because the social worker your government assigned quit two weeks in and no one told us and because he was old he was trusting the people around him and since we couldn’t visit. well I wrote about it if you want every detail.
Interestingly not every place banned visitation.
Still waiting for the apologies. Still haven’t gotten any.
Also I do want to just straight challenge you. I don’t think it was the most prudent. I think it was the easiest. Those are different things. And I take umbrage at conflating them.
Also if you were a nurse or doctor during that time watching people die left and right with no prior underlying conditions, you’d probably be pressed to not allow people to visit either.
If you want to. I often find it important to look at people in healthcare and say. “Read this. And sleep well.”. And no. I don’t feel a certain way about this. This was unnecessary to anyone with a conscience. I will say. The only thing the extreme lockdowns proved was that Stanley millgram had humanity pegged when he said they’ll default to just obeying people in authority.
I want this to be seen by everyone scrolling by. Not every state or government went to the extreme with lockdowns. Which means not every choice was the most prudent.
Yea I'm with you. I feel the authorities were pretty up front that their guidance was heavily caveated and likely to change since they were dealing with a brand new disease. And in general I think people forget that Covid was highly lethal pre-vaccine, and are associating pre-vax safety measures with their post-vax reality where Covid is basically a nasty flu.
And I think Fauci critics are severely downplaying how much conservative anger at him was a result of him daring to contradict Trump on Ivermectin and the claims of the antivax crowd.
If you’d like to interview someone for your book about why my brother wasn’t allowed to visit his dying deteriorating father without threatening legal action while when he came in they just put him in basically a hazmat suit (which fine if that’s what it take. Eat the cost hospitals) buy by that point the damage and atrophying had gone too far. I’m more than willing to go into it. Not every state went that far. Massachusetts allowed visitors for the terminally ill if you got a covid test ahead of time.
So it feels, to me, like some states actually were reasonable and some weren’t and that is well within the realm of criticism.
I’m sorry about your brother and your father. I can only imagine how hard that must have been for your family and I do empathize with that pain. I don’t want to discount the trauma that you or anyone else felt during that time. I only ask for you to consider another perspective. People have forgotten how bad things were back at the beginning of the pandemic. This virus didn’t act like any other virologists had ever seen. Even the most experienced with decades of research. When SARS and MERS came about years earlier, we were lucky very few in the US were affected by them. We thought at first perhaps we could contain it like those viruses. But then we could not. One it seemed to sicken and kill not just the elderly, but people who seemed otherwise healthy. And yet, some people who were unhealthy or old were not affected by it at all. That was very unusual and made no sense. Then, it seemed to spread by those who didn’t have any symptoms, which was something we’d never seen before. It was very frustrating to not be able to tell people what they could do to be safe because we just had no idea. We knew that if we did nothing…we’d be vilified. It’s like a huge tsunami comes and suddenly overtakes a whole village and all you have is a bucket, you tell people to run. It isn’t much but there isn’t much you can do in the moment. No one seems to really appreciate that. So in the beginning, you have zero idea how this is spreading, zero idea why some people seem more susceptible than others, and you have people crowding up the ICU. What do you do? You try to stop it in any way possible with the resources that you have. You tell people to stay in their homes. You close down schools. You don’t allow people inside the hospitals who aren’t there to be treated because they may or may not get others sick. It’s all you can do. As the months went by, and as more was known, yes, things should have become more relaxed. But without the vaccine it was still difficult to do. What I would like to ask all the Fauci haters is: what would you have done in the same situation and how would it have been better? Just let people die as suggested by Battacharya? Do you think that would have not drawn scrutiny? Do nothing? People are eager to complain and point the finger, but if they were put in the same exact situation, I doubt they could have come up with a better plan. Especially with a president that was lying and saying the exact opposite and telling people not to listen to the ones who had studied viruses for decades and handled other pandemics.
So. You had to panic because it was hard? I appreciate the position people were in. I’m not anti lockdown. I am anti extreme lockdown. And no. Not everything that was done by the industry was thought through, ethical, or caring in anyway.
People in medicine take a lot of schooling. Make a decent living. Get a lot of social cache. So much is given. Which means much is expected. If you’re just as prone to panic as the average journalist then I’m not sure that social cache is deserved.
I take issue with the “no exceptions” rule. Which again. Lot every state and not every country did. So while I can appreciate your position I and you have to acknowledge that, in fact, not everyone reacted the same way and we can grade those reactions on a scale.
I do not abide with the idea that the entire field and every state regardless of its reaction. Is equally absolved of culpability for panicking. And I dislike framing it as a whole bucket where either 1. We don’t do anything or 2. The entire medical apparatus in every state is equally cleared of all hysterical overreaction. Not everyone overreacted. But I’d like the people who did to cop to it.
So I’m sorry. But while I was told by the medical establishment that “well. Marching for social justice is okay. But don’t go into churches. And definitely don’t visit loved ones In hospitals.” And while you were all NARCing on your neighbors for using or not using masks. Or wearing them right. Or wearing the right ones. I was dealing with a real problem that no one wanted to hear about because they were “scared”.
What I never see is this. And you don’t have to do this because it isn’t genuine if I write it for you. Or anyone. But this is what I want from anyone in that field.
“We went too far in some places. We got caught up and were scared and because of that we abdicated our duty to do no harm first. We should have done better and have hopefully learned a lot from that and can do better in the future. But nothing will ever erase the mistakes that were made and we apologize and will promise to do better in the future”.
I’m just tired of people blanket defending things. Not everything is defensible. And it’s okay to have been wrong in any situation. Doesn’t make a person weak.
But I won’t get that because it’s politicized. Everyone thinks “oh. I’m being attacked. This person must be super [insert] wing. I better turtle up and defend.
It’s fine I just need to how off some steam now and again. But I do get mad when people walk past without engaging with the psychology of the time and can’t say “okay. Maybe we fucked up here and there.”
Thank you for sharing your honest feelings without feeling the need to attack or throw out conspiracy theories. If I sound curt, it’s because that is most of what I have gotten and I have begun to naturally respond in the defensive out of habit. That Jesse says “I don’t think he’s antisemitic” regarding Mamdani, reminds me of why I stopped listening to BARpod in the first place. His uncritical cover and excuse making for blatant anti-semites. Next he’ll be saying JD Vance doesn’t hate Jews!
I'm with you on Mamdani. I think that both he and his wife are antisemites. He tries to hide it a little with his glibness, but it is there. And there are a lot of people carrying water for him, like Jesse. It isn't just his Israel obsession, it is his refusal to engage with the attacks on Jews that are happening all the time now in NYC and refusal to do anything but the bare minimum about it.
Yeah, I get the sense that for Jesse an antisemite is someone who must hate ALL Jews, and hate them in the seething visceral way a Nazi ideologue would. Since Mamdani is ok with Jews who disavow Israel, he doesn't qualify. His approach to this issue seems to rely very heavily on a priori reasoning, which makes sense because he is not very knowledgeable about the history. I think if pressed Jesse would acknowledge that subbing in the word "Zionist" for "Jew" doesn't magically inoculate one from the charge of antisemitism. But he doesn't feel it in his kishkes and has a much easier time recognizing right wing antisemitism.
I get what you’re saying and can agree! I also think one thing he might forget is that even the Mamdanis of the world who would say “I love Jews who hate Israel” usually have the parenthetical “(until they stop being useful political fodder)”
Oooffff it ought to be a crime to have Jesse on and saying anything about Israel without Michael there. Yeah, those two words immediately came out of my mouth as I was listening.
There are many countries receiving US aid that have had quibbles with the Palestinians or another downtrodden group of people. Not a single democrat has admitted that Fauci lied repeatedly to manipulate the public, got the major stuff wrong, and subverted “science” to cover his own ass.
Yes, there are “practical” reasons to reject the truth in favor of political tribalism. I guess that’s the point. Everyday Democrats have become more resistant to facts than the most hardcore MAGA Qanon true believer. I was a lifelong Democrat voter, now I can barely talk to them.
I too voted D from when I turned 18 I til about 40. I voted R, not because I liked Trump, but because I saw so starkly the party of reason (I thought) devolve into the practices they used to oppose. Be careful fighting monsters…
“it’s all tied up with the craziest aspects of COVID denialism from the right as well as anti vaccine sentiment. It’s hard to go at him without seeming like a nut.”
Fuck that 2020 BLM-like conformity. Be brave and call bullshit.
I never liked the Fauci fan club. It rubbed me the wrong way. Not that I had much against him at the time. But there was something about it I didn’t like.
BREAKING: Bari Weiss's CBS News is acquiring The Fifth Column in an unprecedented move, which includes the immediate shutdown of the Blocked and Reported podcast.
i will pay easily 1 dollar to 1.50 per month more for an extra crossover with barpod a month, this was hilarious
I’ll see your $1.50 and raise you $300 more a year.
I’ll counter by cancelling my subscription
HELL YES! BARPOD kicks ASS.
Bari should roll both shows up into CBS/The Free Press/Paramount Skydance and give them a prime time panel TV show that will shock and offend her elderly viewers.
Of course Herzog and her dog will have to leave her island hermitage for lesbians and racists. Or relocate everyone else to her, which may be easier.
Blocked and Reported and The Fifth Column in the same room? What is this, a crossover episode?
Guys come on, Jewrassic Park!
Why isn’t this the top comment?
Oh my god, it was staring us all in the face but we were too blind to see it! Absolutely fucking brilliant
Has anyone pitched this to Spielberg given he directed both Jurassic Park and Schindler's List?
They were released 6 months apart! What a 1993!
Aka Borough Park. Home of the Brontoslov Rebbe.
Wish Moynihan was there to school Jesse about Israel
We give money to the UAE, who support the RSF is Sudan who have killed at least twice as many (low end estimate, high end is close to half a million) Sudanese as Palestinians. Israel breaks people's brains who are otherwise reasonable.
Jesse goes on hiatus from BARpod to "finish his book" and then immediately goes on the fifth, lol
Really looking forward to their hang with Ethan Straus today

everybody knows the Fifth wanted Katie but she'd have to cross the country for 6 weeks in her Subaru galaxy to get to the studio
Fun pod. I liked the White Knight movie idea.
Me too! I think he has a great premise and I love the casting.
RFK Jr being the MAGA Reply™️ to Fauci has also not been great imho!
Agreed.

Sources that people with absolutely no underlying conditions were dying left and right.
Sources?

Really. Deleted? Wow. Guess my pain doesn’t count.

lovee some Singal. very glad he is calling out the Jason Arday stuff. cheating is independent of race, I hope.
I really didn't know anything about that until it was brought up. Real crazy stuff, though not unexpected.
That Jesse says “I don’t think he’s antisemitic” regarding Mamdani, reminds me of why I stopped listening to BARpod in the first place. His uncritical cover and excuse making for blatant anti-semites. Next he’ll be saying JD Vance doesn’t hate Jews!

I get what you’re saying and can agree! I also think one thing he might forget is that even the Mamdanis of the world who would say “I love Jews who hate Israel” usually have the parenthetical “(until they stop being useful political fodder)”
To the likes of Jesse, everything is antisemitism except for actual antisemitism.
He is aggressively and willfully ignorant about everything except youth gender medicine
💯 this is why I say, no Jesse without Michael Moynihan
He was disgusting after 10/7. And I guess has remained disgusting.
Oooffff it ought to be a crime to have Jesse on and saying anything about Israel without Michael there. Ep was great except for this few minutes at the end where there is some passing comment about how not Palestinians were killed in Jordan or something on those lines. Um black September??? This is why we need Michael when Jesse is on. Otherwise, very fun episode
Yeah, those two words immediately came out of my mouth as I was listening.
There are many countries receiving US aid that have had quibbles with the Palestinians or another downtrodden group of people. But one country has a distinguishing feature, and for some reason that's the country the gets the (negative) attention for receiving US aid. I wonder if there is a connection?
I think part of it isn't antisemitism, it's more like self-hatred from white, educated, Western, affluent beneficiaries of settler-colonialism, and they see Israel as all of those things, too. They don't hold Palestinians or the other beneficiaries of US aid to the same standard because they're not like the selves that they hate.
Yes, but isn’t it odd that they don’t see the Oxford/Cambridge-educated ruling class in Jordan, Egypt, etc. the exact same way?
Yes how dare Jesse express his personal opinion!
Not knowing about Black September isn't an opinion.
Not a single democrat has admitted that Fauci lied repeatedly to manipulate the public, got the major stuff wrong, and subverted “science” to cover his own ass.

It’s complicated. That doesn’t make Fauci a hero
It is. Rand Paul is a shit. But I have very serious questions about Fauci. I’m pro vax. But I have very serious questions about Fauci. Etc etc
