Regarding Alexander’s recent email: I’m a zillennial who graduated from an elite university relatively recently and a political moderate (who keeps my politics out of work altogether.) I second his recommendations, but I’ll add a few suggestions of my own for spotting recent graduates who likely won’t bludgeon you with ideology (because we do exist!).

1. If a young candidate doesn’t list pronouns in their resume, cover letter, or LinkedIn bio, the chances that they’ll be a progressive evangelist at work are slim to none.

2. Piggybacking off of Alexander’s suggestion to look for mothers returning to the workplace, I also suggest looking at non-traditional students.

3. Pay attention to their interview outfit. The more classic it is, the better. Be a bit more wary of trendy or overly casual interview outfits. The same goes for hairstyles and makeup.

4. In addition to the suggestion to look at immigrants, young people whose parents are immigrants often are excellent employees. They tend to have a really strong drive and work ethic.

Also, when considering younger candidates, look at their work experience. Those who have worked menial jobs while going to school are usually less entitled and more grounded in their worldview.

I did a lot of hiring in my day. Probably north of 200 people.

1. I never hired from schools that considered themselves “elite.” I learned that “elite” means I don’t have to pay my dues.

2. I never hired 4.0s. Same issue as #1.

3. I always preferred students who worked while in school. Pointed to someone who could organize and prioritize effectively.

4. I preferred students whose grades showed that they overcame adversity. First semester 2.0 gpa to a 3.8 final semester is excellent. Similarly their grades should generally increase as they get into their major. If they don’t I’m thinking you picked the wrong major.

5. Ditto on returning to workforce people and migrant/children of migrants.

6. Also, military veterans. Especially if they’ve been under fire. They aren’t afraid of anything.

Alexander here- I love that! And thanks for the kind words.

I clicked on the link to watch Lukianoff on Rising to see if my views of Briahna Joy Gray have softened. (They were once highly favorable; then they plummeted in the wake of 10/7.)

They have not.

I just can't suffer her any more. I don't get how Robby does it.

I don't really need lessons on class struggle from someone who went to Harvard.

Wow, glad I watched but you aren't wrong. The axe grinding is so unnecessary. She should ask pointed questions but man is she just trying to dunk on him about Palestine and he's got her number.

Also, the end

BJG: Rambling nonsense..."You can respond"

GL: "It was just a statement..."

BJG: "You don't have too. Thanks for being on"

Absolutely priceless. What a schmuck.

I’m in 100% agreement about BJG. I’ve decided to wean off of Rising only because she comes off as smug, unprofessional, and close-minded on the Israel Palestine conflict.

And condescending to boot! :)

I use that word repeatedly when describing her! Again, this is all since 10/7. So it’s not just me who sees the difference 🤔.

In an interview with Glenn Loury, she stated (as an uncontested premise) that black women are the most highly educated demographic group in the USA.

At this point it was clear that she doesn't have much contact with reality.

I booted some money Nancy's way (though with Cash app all I know is it went somewhere :) because this is one of the only real things substack tends to lack. Real, boots on the ground reporting from a trusted source. It may be impractical since I have no idea how it would work, but would it be a good idea to set up some kind of Fif'dom stringer pool for funding these kind of things?

If West Wing taught me anything, (other than Gilbert and Sullivan references and Schwepp's bitter lemon) its that going out in the field is costly and dangerous. Just a thought. Figure the fif' is full of folks with some cash on the side might be a good way for us all to help fill in the gaps on this kinda stuff. Thoughts?

p.s. Speaking of the Fif demo. I must again commend you guys for not doing ads. I HAVE to imagine the money you all get offered for that kind of thing is tempting. I wouldn't mind the odd link here and there for things you all love, but the absence of ad reads is something I really appreciate. Keep it up!

Do you listen to the Reason Roundtable? Matt reading Better Help ads is amazing. Gimme that and Peter Suderman talking about his dogs, and I don’t even need the rest.

I have to agree there. I have heard an ocean of ad reads and I do like Matt's delivery quite well. I feel like Peter does an ad read everytime they get to the culture section since its almost always a Disney product :D

And some kinda booze obviously.

I came across some good news/bad news this week from a WSJ article about the "River to the Sea" chants:

https://nitter.net/krishnanrohit/status/1733721903918133690

The good news: conveying some basic facts about the region and it's history convinces ~70% of these students to change their mind about supporting the slogan.

The bad new: so many people were willing to chant such a thing when they knew nothing about the slogan itself nor the region it referred to.

I also think the anti-Israel folks (or folx) may have overplayed their hand. People only have so much tolerance for having traffic stopped by people who want to make a point.

If I had the misfortune of living in Michigan (I do think it’s probably gorgeous for about 100 days a year...but I’ve never been there on one of those days), I’d probably go with Meijer. JA has the ability to sound great for a few minutes, then say something just incredibly pandering to the LP Edgelords. Though I don’t always agree with Peter, he explains how he got to his conclusions without winking to the RON PAUL crowd.

As for Fauci, still think the COVID shake-out provides a perfect opportunity to test the internationalists’ admiration of multi-state justice. How many people have died worldwide because of the work that was being funded by the US performed in China?

Millions.

Trial at the ICC is absolutely justified.

Yes, you simply must decamp to Michigan and then do a live event so I can join the fun.
